AISI 1045 Carbon Steel Castings Main Characteristics and Uses: AISI 1045 carbon steel is a medium carbon steel containing about 0.45% carbon and a balanced amount of manganese. This composition gives it a good combination of strength, hardness and machinability, making it popular in a wide range of industrial and mechanical applications. After heat treatment, 1045 can reach higher hardness levels, thereby improving wear resistance and durability, while still retaining enough toughness to handle moderate impact.

I. Main Characteristics

1.1 1045 Carbon Steel castings Chemical Composition and Basic Properties:

Carbon content: 0.43%~0.5%, which belongs to the category of medium carbon steel.

Density: about 7.87 g/cm3.

Tensile strength: 570~700 MPa.

Brinell hardness: between 170~210.

1.2 Good machinability:

AISI 1045 carbon steel has good processing properties such as cutting, cold forging, forging, etc., which makes it easier to process and form during part manufacturing.

1.3 Good weldability:

The steel can be connected by common welding methods, and the welding performance is reliable.

1.4 High strength and impact resistance:

In the normalized or hot-rolled state, AISI 1045 carbon steel exhibits high strength and good impact resistance.

1.5 Low hardenability but can be strengthened by heat treatment:

Due to the lack of suitable alloying elements, the hardenability of AISI 1045 is low, and it is difficult to obtain a deep hardened layer by quenching. But after flame or induction hardening treatment, its surface hardness can reach 54~60HRC.

2. Main uses

2.1 Mechanical parts manufacturing:

AISI 1045 carbon steel is widely used to manufacture various mechanical parts, such as bolts, nuts, shafts, pins, gears, etc. These parts need to withstand certain mechanical loads and wear, and the high strength and good machinability of AISI 1045 carbon steel make it an ideal choice.

2.2 Hand tool manufacturing:

The steel is also commonly used to manufacture hand tools such as hammers and hammer handles. These tools need to have a certain hardness and toughness to withstand the impact and wear during use.

2.3 Structural components:

AISI 1045 carbon steel plates can be used to manufacture structural components such as machine bases and frames, which need to withstand large loads and maintain stability.

2.4 Forging manufacturing:

This steel can be forged and is suitable for manufacturing forgings such as connecting rods, steering arms, truck front axles and driving wheels. These forgings need to undergo appropriate heat treatment processes to obtain the required cutting performance and mechanical properties.

In summary, AISI 1045 carbon steel has a wide range of applications in the fields of mechanical parts manufacturing, hand tool manufacturing, and structural parts and forging manufacturing due to its good machinability, weldability, high strength and impact resistance. At the same time, its surface hardness and mechanical properties can be further improved through appropriate heat treatment to meet the needs of different application scenarios.
